Poker Plays 101: The Types of Draws
Fully understanding drawing plays are important if one wants to be proficient in playing poker. This is because most of the time, one will be dealt a drawing hand, and would need to decide if they should keep or fold the hand. An aspect of drawing plays that a player needs to be familiar with is the type of draws.
Draws are typed according to their chances of improvement, and what outs are needed to improve them. An 'out' is a card that is yet to be dealt that could improve a drawing hand. So a hand of 9 - 10 has six outs to become a straight (6 - 7 - 8, or Jack - Queen - King).
Here we will provide you an outline of the different kinds of draws.
1. Up-and-down straight draw
The up-and-down straight draw is made with a hand that has consecutive or connecting cards, and could become a straight on either end. An example of this is a hand of 4 -5, which have three outs on each end: Ace - 2 - 3 or 6 - 7 - 8.
2. Gutshot draw
The gutshot draw is another straight draw, but this time it is with a hand that has missing internal parts, and could only improve into a straight in a single way. An example is 5 - 9, which has only three outs in the middle: a 6 - 7 - 8.
3. Flush draw
The flush draw is as simple as it sounds: it is made with a hand that is suited and could improve into a flush. A suited drawing hand has 11 outs in the flush draw (thirteen cards in a suit minus the two hole cards in hand). Thus, a suited hand has a high percentage of improving into a flush.
4. Backdoor draw
A backdoor draw is a general type that applies to any hand that needs two more outs in order to win. For example, if you have two suited cards in hand and a similarly-suited card on the flop, then it is said that you are on a backdoor draw. This kind of draw is very unlikely, since there are fewer cards to reveal.
Always keep in mind that these types of draws could be combined. For example, a player that needs a gutshot draw may have cards that are suited, and so a flush draw is possible. As a general tip, play only hands that have good-ranking cards and have multiple ways of improving. By doing so, you will have good chances of having a superb hand.
